Jenn has always been a go-getter. She was the first hirer to Nexim’s Admin Program. She has been very successful in moving up the ranks!

In January 2021, the Nexim Admin Program started with just four people. The program is designed to create development opportunities for at-risk youth. It’s a paid internship for 16—24-year-olds focusing on developing professional office experience.

Before Nexim, Jenn worked in a Food Bank. She has always wanted to help people. When she realized Nexim and her values aligned, they worked together to create space in the healthcare field for people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Jenn studies Social Service Work at George Brown and works three days a week at Nexim.

When Jenn first started just over a year ago, she learned the systems and different types of care provided by Nexim. She finds that with some things as personal as homecare, she prefers to talk to clients directly on the phone to learn about their unique needs. She reviews whether a client needs Personal Support Workers (PSW), Developmental Support Workers (DSW), developmental disability counsellors, child and youth workers, community and social service workers, Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) and/or Registered Nurses (RN). Jenn then works with the client (usually a loved one) to create a personalized support plan.

Nexim has given her a direct route to helping people and the freedom to be creative and try new things.

Jenn is now training new Admin Program team members. She teaches interns to write emails, make calls, answer questions, and use Nexim’s internal software. In addition, she recently created a training manual for interns.

The program has grown in the last year. There have been nine people taking part in Nexim’s Admin Program. Some of them have transitioned to become full-time employees!

The work itself is fast-paced, and Jenn loves that. Jenn’s good at training and helping people. She believes the Admin Program is a great resource for other students. She hopes to help grow it and get public funding. Jenn said, “With time and experience, I want to help make the Admin Program much bigger. In the future, I want to help expand it beyond Toronto.”
